On 11 June 1910, an editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) announced to those who had ‘been awaiting with eager interest’ that the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching had released its report on the status of medical education in the USA and Canada. The editorial suggested ‘that the Carnegie Foundation is in a position in which it may exert a powerful and growing influence for good on the development of medical education in this country’.
